In the past few weeks, Joshua Kimmich’s future at FC Bayern has been questioned several times. The reason is his contract expires in 2025, which has not yet been extended. Sports director Christoph Freund commented on the controversial topic on Wednesday evening.
Joshua Kimmich has been receiving an unusually high level of criticism for a few weeks now. The midfielder was particularly counted on by external observers. Internally it looks different. Everything is fine there, Bayern sports director Christoph Freund assured on Wednesday after Munich’s Champions League game against Galatasaray.
Kimmich is still “very important” for the record champions and an “absolute leader,” said Freund. “He knows his role at FC Bayern. And we know it too,” said Freund, explaining that the internal climate between club and player is still good.
Kimmich is in talks with FC Bayern bosses
The fact that the contract, which expires in 2025, has not yet been extended is not a headache for Freund. However, he also confirmed that the parties have not yet sat down at the table to finally discuss the issue.
“We haven’t talked in detail yet,” revealed Freund, but added directly: “But of course I’ve spoken to Jo for a while.” However, the sports director could not or did not want to say whether the national player’s tendency would be to stay or to move.
Freund also admitted that things didn’t always go according to plan for Kimmich in the last few weeks. However, he doesn’t see the matter as dramatically as some of the critics. “When you play as consistently as he did at such a high level over such a long period of time, there are bound to be the occasional mistake,” the sports director showed understanding for one or two of the national player’s annoyances in the recent past.
