Westphalia “60 minutes outstanding”
Borussia Dortmund’s youngsters blew a 2-0 lead against Newcastle United in the UEFA Youth League. After 90 minutes there was a 2-2 draw against the “Magpies”, with which the Westphalians still had all their chances of reaching the knockout round. RB Leipzig’s U19s qualified for the latter on Tuesday with a 1-0 away win at Red Star.
After four match days, the Saxons can no longer be pushed out of the first two places in Group G. Center forward Yannick Eduardo scored the decisive goal against Belgrade. “The boys are ready to take the next step and create something unique. They are burning and eager for it,” RB coach Sebastian Heidinger said before the game. For Leipzig it is the first qualification for the knockout round of the competition.
BVB, meanwhile, maintained second place in Group F with seven points behind AC Milan (9) and ahead of Paris St. Germain (6). The decision as to whether the Black and Yellows advance could therefore only be made in the last group game on December 13th against the French fall.
BVB coach Tullberg: Were “physically inferior” in the end
“We played outstandingly for 60 minutes, should have been leading 4-0 or 5-0, the opponent didn’t even shoot on goal. But in the last half hour we were completely inferior to Newcastle physically and were no longer ready for the Youth League in defense. The substitution of Hendry Blank had a huge influence on the result,” said U19 coach Mike Tullberg after the draw against the English.
Center forward Julian Rijkhoff and Cole Campbell gave Borussia a 2-0 lead at half-time. Cathal Heffernan headed in a cross from Trevan Sanusi twelve minutes before the final whistle to make it 1-2, James Huntley scored the late equalizer in the 86th minute.
