Smartphone ban will also apply in primary and special education from next year

From January 1 next year, students in primary schools and special education will have to do without their smartphones in class. This was announced by outgoing Minister Mariëlle Paul (Primary and Secondary Education, VVD) on Tuesday letter to the House of Representatives. The smartphone ban has also already been introduced in secondary schools.

The measure should contribute to a learning environment “in which students can concentrate, be involved and teachers can teach effectively,” writes Paul.

Teachers, parents and students will discuss the implementation of the ban in the near future, which will not officially come into effect until the 2024-2025 school year. In principle the starting point becomes ‘No, unless’. Exceptions are made, for example, for students with diabetes who have an insulin app on their phone.
