The round of 16 in the DFB Cup will be drawn on Sunday (November 5th, 2023), and the games will take place at the beginning of December.
When does the draw take place?
The draw will take place at the Football Museum in Dortmund from around 3:45 p.m. Para sports expert Denise Schindler will draw the lots. ZDF shows the draw as part of the broadcast of the women’s Bundesliga game between Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg livesportschau.de reports in live-Ticker.
What rules apply to the draw?
From the round of 16 there are no longer different draw pots. The teams are all drawn from one pot. In principle, the club drawn first has home advantage. Exception: If a team that plays in the 3rd league or lower meets a club from the Bundesliga or the 2nd Bundesliga, the so-called “amateur club” gets home rights.

When will the games in the round of 16 take place?
The round of 16 will take place on December 5th and 6th, live-Games on ARD and ZDF will be determined after the draw. ARD and ZDF will show a total of 15 games from the competition live.
Since the beginning of the 2022/23 season, there have been two rounds: the eight games in the quarter-finals will be played on four different dates. In the 1st main round the two carry teamswho are in the DFL Supercup play their cup games later.
- 1st main round: August 11th – August 14th, 2023 and August 26th/27th September 2023
- 2nd main round: October 31st/1st November 2023
- Round of 16: 5th/6th December 2023
- Quarterfinals: 30/31 January 2024 and 6/7. February 2024
- Semifinals: 2nd/3rd April 2024
- Final in Berlin: May 25, 2024
What can the clubs earn?
A new contract for TV rights has been in effect in the cup since 2022. In the 2022/23 season, the DFB paid out more money to the clubs than ever before. This season the amounts will be slightly exceeded again by the semi-finals. The DFB has not yet announced the exact numbers for the final.
All participating clubs will receive at least 209,247 euros for the 1st main round. Anyone who has survived the first round will receive more than 400,000 euros in the second round, and the amounts per round continue to increase.
The clubs have to share the money from ticket sales and perimeter advertising after deducting all costs and taxes. Ten percent of this income also goes to the DFB, so each club receives 45 percent of this money.

What else can the clubs achieve?
Even after UEFA’s European Cup reform, which applies from the 2024/25 season, the winner of the DFB Cup has the right to start in the new European league phase League.
Is the DFB Cup winner already over the Bundesliga for them? Champions League or the Europe League qualified, the place goes to the Bundesliga, where it is then distributed according to the final table. The losing finalist of the DFB Cup final cannot benefit under any circumstances.
