BVB is in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. In the 1-0 (1-0) home win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Borussia Dortmund relied on many fresh players in the starting line-up on Wednesday evening. BVB coach Edin Terzic afterwards commented in detail on the performances of Salih Özcan, Youssoufa Moukoko and Co. Terzic was also already looking ahead to the top game against FC Bayern in the Bundesliga on Saturday (6:30 p.m./Sky).
BVB coach Edin Terzic made five changes to the starting lineup on Wednesday evening compared to the 3-3 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt last Sunday. The end result was a 1-0 (1-0) home win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and a place in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.
“I think we took a clear step forward today,” Terzic said at the press conference after the game, satisfied with his team’s performance.
This is what BVB coach Terzic says about…
… about the many changes compared to the Frankfurt game: “We have emphasized this again and again in the last few days: We are very happy that we have few injuries. We have a high level of performance in the squad that we can rely on. We now have four games in nine days. That’s it But it would be negligent if we don’t rely on fresh guys. Today we had five changes compared to the appearance in Frankfurt and we still showed a really good team performance.”
… a 1-0 as my new favorite result: “We like all the victories. Of course we want to take the next step and not only defend our own goal and protect the only goal, but also manage to make the game more clear. We will take that with us into the next tasks. Nevertheless, we like it how we defended it clearly and cleanly until the end today. I think, especially in the final minutes, we not only defended it with good defensive work, but also with possession of the ball. We kept showing ourselves active, we were able to move the opponent “We were able to let them run. We really liked that today.”
…Jamie Bynoe-Gittens: “Jamie needed the first five to ten minutes to get into the game. When he then understood that he couldn’t run so close before accelerating, he played a really great game. He had a lot of moves the left wing.”
… Giovanni Reyna: “Gio was very, very active, was never within reach of the opponent, positioned himself very well and was directly involved in the goal.”
… Nico Schlotterbeck and Salih Özcan: “If I can single out two players: Both central defenders played a great game, but I think Schlotti won every duel. Salih Özcan’s performance today, how many balls he won and how many meters he made, was extraordinary and showed how important this competition is to us today.”
… Özcan as challenger to Emre Can: “That’s not our issue. He is Emre Can’s teammate. We know that we need every single player and that we will rely on every single player. Salih didn’t have an easy time at the beginning either and had to watch a lot from the outside . But we knew how important he was to the team and he proved that in an extraordinary way today.”
… the substitution of Marius Wolf due to injury: “In the case of Marius Wolf, he already received a blow above the knee in Frankfurt. But he was able to train with the team yesterday and today signaled that he can play. In this phase of the game it was about that “He felt that it felt firmer again. We didn’t want to take any risks.”
… Emre Can’s downtime: “Unfortunately, Emre hasn’t developed as well as we would have liked in the last few days. The goal was for him to be there today. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out. Now it is the next goal for Saturday.”
… FC Bayern: “What is extremely important to us: At the beginning of the season, in preparation, we decided that we would no longer make a difference in which competition we compete in and which opponent we play against. The only difference we want to make as a team, is the difference between winning and losing. We want to invest everything in winning games. We showed that in a really great way today. That’s exactly how we will prepare for the game on Saturday, regardless of the opponent looks. We know that we haven’t won for a long time. But we also know that we’ve been pretty close in the past, especially in home games. We want to show that again on Saturday. We took a really good step towards that today. “
