The best horror series on Netflix
Slasher (since 2016)
The series is reminiscent of the slasher films popular in the nineties such as “Scream” or “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. There are currently three seasons of the horror series and the first two can be seen on Netflix. The seasons of the anthology series are not related to each other in terms of content and the cast changes every season. Shocker fans can look forward to independent stories. While the first season still follows the old formula with a masked murderer, season 2 is a little more confusing.
Wednesday (since 2022)
The very successful Netflix original “Wednesday” by Tim Burton could be described as horror light. Anyone who knows the old “Addams Family” films or even the series from the 60s knows that you can expect a lot of sophisticated humor here. In addition, the series, which focuses on the Addams’ daughter, takes place in a relatively classic American high school setting (even if her classmates are werewolves, gorgons and sirens). But it is precisely the setting, reminiscent of a teen film, that gives the horror its special effect. Because an unknown monster is up to mischief and Wednesday, of all people, witnesses one of his murders.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
“The Haunting of Hill House” raised the bar for horror series a bit higher, and not just on Netflix. Viewers even complained about sleep disorders and nausea – for days! The series is not for the faint of heart or the faint of heart, but it should finally give horror veterans a real kick again. The horror here comes from a classic ghost story based on the novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. The film adaptation “The Haunted Castle” was released in 1999, but the Netflix series increases the horror factor even further. The Haunting of Hill House is often compared to the film Poltergeist when it comes to the type of horror. The series was very well received not only by viewers, but also by critics. The second season of “The Haunting of Bly Manor” was released in 2020 and can also be seen on Netflix.
The Sinner (2017 – 2021)
The first season of this horror series is based on the novel “The Sinner” by German author Petra Hammesfahr, but takes place in the US state of New York. Harry Ambrose, an inspector and marked by life, is confronted with various, psychologically highly complex crimes over the four seasons. At the start of the series we find ourselves at a summer lake. Couples picnic, children play, some bathe. Suddenly a young mother storms out and stabs a man – whom she claims she has never seen before. But that can’t be everything, Commissioner Ambrose is sure of that. But how is he supposed to crack the mystery if even the perpetrator doesn’t know what drove her to commit her crime?
Marianne (2019)
The series, which shocked the Netflix community when it was released in 2019, fittingly started on September 13th – a Friday. “Marianne” is the name of the French series, which owes its title to a witch who loves to cause bloody mischief. She is actually just a character from the novel by the successful author Emma, who now has to defend herself against the attacks of the character she created. “Marianne” crawls right under your skin with dark images, lots of shocking moments and a witch’s grimace to scare you.
Ratched (since 2020)
The Netflix original series “Ratched” was the provider’s most successful series production in 2020. Conceived by the makers of the successful production “American Horror Story,” it is no wonder that the series quickly became a horror hit. It sheds light on the backstory of the most famous fictional nurse of all time: Mildred Ratched. The protagonist is played brilliantly by Sarah Paulson, also known from “American Horror Story”. In 1947, Nurse Ratched begins working in a psychiatric hospital in sunny California. The patients there are guinea pigs for various new “therapies”, such as lobotomy. The lady quickly takes a liking to her new position of power and the cruel methods.

Eli (2019)
Like many horror films in which children play one of the main roles, “Eli” also gives you a very special goosebumps feeling. 11-year-old Eli suffers from a severe autoimmune disease. His last chance seems to be private treatment in a remote, sterile mansion. But Eli soon notices that there are things going on here that are not normal. But his parents believe he is reacting badly to the new medication and is hallucinating. The doctor ultimately said that things would get worse before Eli got better.
The Nun (2018)
With “The Nun” (2018), the “Conjuring” series received another spin-off. A young nun hanged herself in a monastery in Romania. In the Vatican they seem to suspect that things are not going well here and are therefore sending out a team of investigators. Father Burke and the novice Irene are supposed to get to the bottom of the incident. Why should a traumatized priest and a young woman who hasn’t even taken her vows be asked to investigate a suicide? This remains unclear for a long time. Gradually the two discover the sinful past of the monastery. But it’s no longer about solving a death, but about saving their lives and souls.
Verónica – Playing with the Devil (2017)
The 2017 horror film “Verónica” is based on a proven true story that took place in Vallecas, Spain in 1991. It is so well known because, according to director Paco Plaza, it was the first time a police officer mentioned supernatural phenomena in a report. Unfortunately, in reality, the whole thing doesn’t end well: 18-year-old Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro died in the hospital during a seizure. In the film, it is the young Verónica who quickly regrets the séance she held during a solar eclipse – if that doesn’t at least cause a shudder.
Malevolent – And Evil Exists (2018)
Angela and Jackson make a good team: she has the “gift”, he sells her performance as a séance. Well, to gain the necessary self-confidence, Jackson has to regularly listen to a pep talk on his Walkman, but all in all, the two siblings’ business model works very well. At least until they visit Mrs. Green, who lives in a former orphanage. She claims to have heard terrible screams and trusts in Angela’s “gift”. When she puts on her show, Mrs. Green quickly realizes what is going on here. And Angela also gradually realizes that it’s not the weak nerves of an old lady who are causing mischief here. All of this reminds her frighteningly of her mother, who herself heard voices and saw dead people, which ultimately drove her to suicide.
The Ritual (2017)
A dark forest in beautiful, harsh Scandinavia, hanging animal carcasses and a creature that roams the darkness at night. Sounds scary? It is! For the most part, 2017’s “The Ritual” is exactly what many horror fans want: dark, unexpected and really damn scary. Critics praise the visually beautiful film and the – in the best sense of the word – horrifying atmosphere.
