Never before have so many young people received youth care

Nearly 394,000 young people received youth care last year, so approximately one in eleven Dutch people under the age of 23. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), this is a record. These are provisional figures, the actual number may be even higher, the statistics service emphasizes.

In Tiel, Terneuzen, Krimpen aan den IJssel and Veendam, proportionately most young people received youth care. In those municipalities this concerns approximately one in eight people. In Raalte, Schiedam, Maassluis, Ameland, Staphorst, Urk and Vlieland, approximately one in twenty young people receive help.

According to Statistics Netherlands, the differences may be related to the number of single-parent families in municipalities, but choices made by municipal authorities about the implementation of youth care may also play a role.
