In an interview with aespa, the singer gives insights into the creation of her songs.
In an edition of Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians” format, Grimes and the K-pop band aespa met and talked about artificial intelligence (AI), technology and music. Among other things, Grimes explained how her songs “California” and “Easily” came about and what role Taylor Swift played in them.
During the discussion with Giselle from aespa, the question arose as to how the singer came up with the sound of the two songs, whereupon Grimes explained: “With ‘California’ I think I only did a Taylor Swift cosplay, but it works also about the media being obsessed with portraying you as a troubled soul or something.”
“Normal” album vs. AI album
When Ningning asked if Grimes had a new album planned, the 35-year-old revealed that she already had a new album ready. She wants to release this together with an AI album that has not yet been completed in order to let the two compete with each other. She explained: “It’s kind of an experiment about AI against humanity. I work with a group of people who use various types of Grimes-style AI. I feed it training data and different things. They do the AI thing and all the art about it. And then I do my thing and the art behind it. I want them to compete.”
