Businessman Peter Nygård, born in Finland, but currently a Canadian citizen, is currently on trial related to sexual crime charges.
Nygård has a long history with sex crime trials. He was sued for the first time for rape in 1980.
In the ongoing trial, Nygård is accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old woman in Toronto between 1988 and 2004.
Denies the allegations
Nygård denies the accusations.
According to prosecutors, Nygård invited young women to his office to talk about job opportunities. He showed the women a luxurious office building and a suite on the top floor. According to prosecutors, the women’s exit from the suite was blocked. The room has a jacuzzi where the women claim the sexual acts took place.
The court also demanded more information about Nygård’s property in the Bahamas, also known as Nygård Cay. Over the years, numerous parties have been organized at the vacation spot in question.
Peter Nygård denied in court on Wednesday that the properties he owns were designed for sexual acts and their concealment. According to Nygård’s lawyer, there is also no rumored “sex cave” in Nygård’s properties.
– That’s insane, Nygård answered the accusations.
– That is not true, he continued.
Memory lapses
Nygård has told the court that he does not remember the women who accused him. Nygård has had trouble remembering dates and names in court. 82-year-old Nygård has said that he suffered from memory lapses.
– It’s almost embarrassing that my mind just goes blank.
– I recommend that you don’t grow old, he laughed in the courtroom.
In court, Nygård spoke enthusiastically about his achievements and companies in the clothing industry, as well as his Finnish roots.
Nygård has been an entrepreneur since the 1960s. His companies have grown into an empire in time. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 shortly after police and the FBI raided its Manhattan headquarters.
