Geert Wilders thinks drama series on television are of abysmal quality these days. The PVV leader does not think it is comparable to Swiebertje from the past. “That was better.”
More than ever, Geert Wilders seems to want to end up in a coalition next year. Many people want a brake on immigration to our country and the PVV seems to be indispensable for this. In any case, the charm offensive has begun: the PVV leader was on the chat program yesterday Time for MAX to talk about his childhood memories.
Movies in safe house
Politicians who give interviews about their private lives: it’s excruciatingly boring. And to make matters worse, Wilders also started harping on about black-and-white films, such as his favorite film How Green Was My Valley from 1941. “A very beautiful film. It’s a complicated story. I have always watched it with my mother for the past ten or fifteen years.”
His mother is now 90. “She is in a nursing home, but when that was not yet the case, she came to me a few times a year, in my safe house where I live, and she enjoyed watching those kinds of movies together. From the thirties, forties and fifties, which she also has memories of. I also developed a love for those films there.”
‘Much better than now’
All those films are better than what we are being presented with now, Wilders fumes. “They were beautiful films, often black and white, from the forties and made in a way… If you compare it with today, I think it has something extra. It was also well played.”
“If you now compare a modern series with – for people around my age – for example a Swiebertje, on Dutch television, then I still think the Swiebertje’s are often better played. Although it is in a cheap setting and less complicated, it was much more real than the junk you often see now.”
Dear wife
How is his elderly mother doing? “I hope she’s watching now because I told her I’m here now. Again: she is a very sweet woman, ninety years old, and she is doing quite well. She is in a nursing home, but fortunately she is still relatively healthy.”
He continues: “She often falters a bit, but she is a very strong woman. She is often, usually happily, in her right mind, so I am very proud of that, of a mother like that.”
Visiting for a few hours
Wilders says he sees her far too little. “We opened the campaign in Venlo last Friday. Then I will of course first go to her for a few hours, but the distance from The Hague to Venlo is not around the corner. Unfortunately, I don’t go there enough, but it’s always a treat to be there.”
Is she proud of him? “Yes, she doesn’t always agree with what I do and what I say, but a mother is a mother, so fortunately she has always been very proud of me.”
