Your Halloween party will get an extra element! A partial lunar eclipse is coming. On the night of October 28 to 29, the moon falls partly in the shadow of the Earth, something that does not happen often. And with a bit of luck we can actually see him in Zoetermeer.

We’ll start at the beginning: what exactly is a lunar eclipse? A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon are aligned, with the Earth in the center. During a partial eclipse, it appears as if a bite has been taken out of the moon.
To see or not to see?
To see a lunar eclipse, it must be clear. At the moment the weather forecast for Saturday evening is cloudy and wet, but there is a chance that the eclipse can be seen during clearing days. For this it must be clear between 8:01 PM and 12:29 AM. The eclipse peaks at 10:15 p.m. In any case, you can stay up later than usual: winter time starts that night, so the clock is set back one hour and you can sleep longer.
Sufficient lunar eclipse
Lunar eclipses occur on average more than twice a year, and are visible anywhere on Earth where the moon is above the horizon at that time. After October 28, the next partial lunar eclipse will be on September 18 next year. The next total lunar eclipse will be on March 14, 2025, but we can only see the end of that. The total lunar eclipse on September 7, 2025 will be visible in the Netherlands. During a complete eclipse, the moon turns red. This is also called a blood moon.
