Four former Werder professionals have scored against Bremen this season. Now it’s time for a duel with the top striker from last season – Niclas Füllkrug in Dortmund.
On the first two matchdays of the season, Werder coach Ole Werner was able to rely on the qualities of Niclas Füllkrug before last season’s top scorer left the club for Borussia Dortmund. The 30-year-old impressed from the start at BVB and scored twice in his first five appearances.
Filling jug is already integrated at BVB
Werner knows Füllkrug’s strengths all too well. Now he no longer has to think about how best to use this, but rather how the national striker can be defended. “It’s a team that plays very variably in the offensive area and changes positions in very different situations,” says Werner about BVB.
In his opinion, Dortmund have already adapted their style of play to Füllkrug and would now play long balls to their new striker more often under pressure. “They didn’t do that as much before, for my taste. In that sense, it’s used in a similar way to how we do it,” reported Werner.
BVB worked on its crosses into the penalty area
Terzic also spoke on Thursday about playing with Füllkrug. The main thing was the quality of the crosses into the penalty area, as he explained. Füllkrug scored 15 of his 16 goals for Werder last season inside the penalty area. Five of them were penalties. Only in the 2-2 draw against VfL Wolfsburg did he score with a shot from outside the penalty area. Of course, the people of Bremen are also familiar with Füllkrug’s highness in the air. He headed five times last season.
Niclas Füllkrug scored 16 goals for Werder in the last Bundesliga season and was the top scorer.
Bitter for Werder: Former Bremen players have scored particularly frequently against their former club this season. Freiburg’s Maximilian Philipp, Jan-Niklas Beste, Erin Dinkci (on loan to 1. FC Heidenheim) and Cologne’s Davie Selke have already scored a goal against Bremen.
Füllkrug should not continue this series on Friday. This won’t be easy because the 30-year-old is in good shape. He also recently scored in the national team in a 3-1 win against the USA and a 2-2 win against Mexico. The starting position for Werder is also not good, as two central defenders, Niklas Stark and Amos Pieper, who are part of the regular staff, are still out. Werner also has to do without keeper Jiri Pavlenka.
