National team: Nagelsmann offers BVB duo “self-study”.

The BVB professionals Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck were not nominated by new national coach Julian Nagelsmann for the German national soccer team’s trip to the USA. The 36-year-old explained the decision on the RTL microphone – and offered the duo the opportunity to rework the content on their own responsibility.

“Of course form plays a role,” said Julian Nagelsmann, explaining the absence of central defender Nico Schlotterbeck and midfielder Emre Can on RTL before the start of the international match against the USA. The fact that the two BVB stars were not taken into account had caused one of the big surprises in advance. The national coach added: “As a coach, I also have a certain responsibility for individual players.”

Emre Can, for example, “didn’t have an easy situation in Dortmund, with a lot of criticism,” said Julian Nagelsmann. The six-man, who was promoted to captain at the start of the season, was placed on the bench by his club coach Edin Terzic due to a low performance in the league games against Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim.

Nagelsmann: BVB defender Schlotterbeck makes “too many mistakes”

Nagelsmann explained: “I want him to regain the stability he had last season.”

In the case of Nico Schlotterbeck, who is currently preferred at the club over Niklas Süle, who was nominated by Julian Nagelsmann, the 23-year-old’s previous performances in the DFB uniform probably also play a role. “With Nico (Schlotterbeck, editor’s note) he is of course very talented, very hungry to win, but he made a little too many mistakes.”

The national coach had already explained when the squad was announced that the door was far from closed for those who stayed at home: “Everyone who stayed at home will also receive the content that we discussed during the week.”

Nagelsmann emphasized: “That means they can prepare themselves through self-study and recommend them again with good performance.”
