V. was released in June. The council chamber of the court in Assen decided that the suspicion against him was not strong enough to detain him any longer. The Public Prosecution Service appealed against this, but the court in Leeuwarden followed the earlier ruling that the nurse could await the criminal investigation at home.
During the investigation, the Public Prosecution Service had to do without V’s medical file. The GGZ was asked to pass on the complete file, but the institution did not consider this necessary for the investigation. The judge agreed.
After months of investigation, the justice department has come to a twofold conclusion, RTV Drenthe announced today. It has been established that V. had no role in some of the initial suspicious deaths. More research is needed in the cases of the other deceased patients. Only after that investigation will it become clear whether or not V. will be prosecuted in those cases.
Little is known about the nurse’s past. Before his period at the WZA, V. worked at the UMCG and the Martini Hospital and did an internship at the Bremen hospital. His period at those hospitals is not part of the criminal investigation.
