“Showed a clear plan”
Third division bottom team MSV Duisburg has found a new coach. Boris Schommers succeeds Torsten Ziegner, who was dismissed in mid-September. The 44-year-old comes from 1. FC Düren and receives a contract until the end of the season, which will be extended by another year if he stays in the league.
After his first professional positions in Nuremberg and Kaiserslautern, Schommers took over the coaching position in Düren in November 2022. He led the promoted club to stay in the league last season, and in the current season the club is tied for second place in the Regionalliga West with leaders Fortuna Cologne. An exit clause makes it possible to switch to MSV.
“The first win of the season on Saturday provided some relief, but MSV’s sporting situation remains serious and tense. We – Ulf Schott, Peter Mohnhaupt, Thomas Wulf, Chris Schmoldt and I – are convinced that Boris Schommers is the right man both personally and professionally. He has shown a clear plan on how we can successfully fight to stay in the league and get MSV back on the road to success in the long term,” said CEO Ingo Wald.
Schommers, who scored an average of 1.81 points in 32 games with Düren, added: “It was clear from the first contact: I wanted to get involved with this big and traditional club with these fans. And the subsequent joint conversations encouraged me: It was open, it was honest, we’re tackling this together, I want to be a part of it. We now want to get back on track in the short term with hard work and then continue to pave the way for a good and successful future.”
