Less black and more color, you will see these living trends next year | Living

More color, less black and you can see that something has been made traditionally. These are the latest trends in home furnishings, says Kelly van Gendt, stylist at vtwonen. “And we will also see a color from the 70s again.”

1. Color

One thing is clear. Our houses have become more colorful in recent years, but that will become even more so, says Van Gendt. “The black disappears a little bit from the interior. In its place are deep dark blue, green and brown. That makes the interior a bit softer. I don’t mean softer in the sense of soft, but the whole thing is a bit more in harmony due to the dark, warm color. Black often makes it a little harder.”

2. Traditional

You have been seeing the traditional style in fashion for some time, says the home stylist. “For example, you can simply repair holes in jeans with a contrasting fabric. You will also see that imperfection in our interiors. It doesn’t have to be pristine, like a vase that rolls off the factory assembly line. Those are all the same. No, it is okay to see a crack in certain items. You can see that the ceramic vase is handmade and has minor flaws. If something is not quite perfect, you can see that it was made with love.”

3. Scandinavian style with color

The Scandinavian style is getting an upgrade, says Van Gendt. “My house at the vtwonenbeurs is decorated in this style. Not with the traditional beige and natural tones, but with soft colors. They are all light shades that give you a happy feeling. For example, light yellow, light green with a yellowish undertone, light blue and light pink tones. The whole is soft, but also lightly colored. Very nice. The new Flexa color of the year also fits in very well.”

4. Orange

“A surprising trend that we will see again in the coming years is orange. Not the terra orange of a few years ago, but really the color we know from King’s Day. That orange is really a new trend. We are returning to the seventies look, but with a modern twist.”

Light blue is also a color that we will see a lot of again, according to trend forecasters. According to Van Gendt, both orange and light blue can be combined well with beige tones. “With orange the palette becomes warmer. With blue it becomes a bit cooler.”

How do you apply the new trends?

To give your interior a big boost, you don’t have to immediately use a paintbrush and rigorously change everything. “That is not sustainable either,” says the interior stylist. “It doesn’t all have to be painted over. Build on what you have. For example, put a soft color on a wall.”

If you don’t dare to do a lot with color, start small with things, Van Gendt advises. “For example, paint a vase that you already have with a color tester. That really gives a different effect and that way you can get used to the color a bit. Then you can go a step further and paint a wall, cupboard or even window frame in that color.”

The vtwonen fair can be visited from October 3 to 8.

Color of the year

AkzoNobel has declared the color Sweet Embrace the color of the year for 2024. “Sweet Embrace is a friendly, warm embrace from pink to a slightly lilac-like color,” says Heleen van Gent of AkzoNobel, known for (among other things) the Flexa paint. “The pastel pink shade matches people’s need to create a home where you can relax. We live in a fragile world, we go from crisis to crisis. Unfortunately, we have little influence on this, but we do have influence on our own lives. At home we can create a place where we can retreat and where we feel at home.”

The pastel pink shade comes with three color palettes that give every interior a different character.

– Cheerful, in which Sweet Embrace is combined with lilac and yellow

– Warm, inspired by Mediterranean clay and sand tones

– Calm, with lots of green and blue tones in which Sweet Embrace looks pinker

How do you choose the right color?

“Use our visualizer app,” says Van Gent. “Then you see what the result is in your own home, with your own things. In addition, it is always good to use a tester to see how it actually looks on the wall. Color is influenced by light and furniture in your room. With a tester you can see how the color behaves. You can do this directly on the wall, but you can also do this on a sheet of paper. I’m also a huge fan of choosing a color palette for your entire home. Then you get beautiful shades of colors that match each other. For example, for the living room you choose calmer earth tones, while for the children’s rooms you choose brighter orange.”

Which paint?

“There are many different types of paint,” says Van Gent. “You have different requirements for every room in your house. For example, in the hall you want paint that is scratch-resistant. In the kitchen you want paint that can be washed off easily. And in the living room it can be a more luxurious paint, such as Flexa Creations. That’s almost make-up for your wall. ”
