Mia (Anna Castillo) and Nico (Tamar Novas) are a young couple fleeing from a totalitarian regime. They leave as stowaways aboard a container towards Ireland, but Nico is soon moved to another container, with the men. The journey therefore turns into a nightmare for both of them, but especially for Mia: the container it is on is stopped for checks.

“Come out,” a soldier shouts. «Don’t be afraid, we won’t do anything to you. I know that anti-famine measures are very cruel to children and pregnant womenand I realize that you don’t trust anyone on this side of this wall, but Who have you trusted so far?“, goes on. «Of those who crowded you in there, condemning you to suffocatetaking everything you had? The ones who promised you a better place? That better place doesn’t exist. Come out and you won’t regret it.”

In a few seconds the soldier summarizes the two sides of the coin: the abuses of the regime and the greed of the smugglers. Mia doesn’t trust it and hides in a cavity between a wooden crate and the top of the container. The other women open the hatch, hoping they have made the right choice. And instead they are shots.

Mia gives birth to Noa

Once the carnage is over, Mia just has to wait. Unfortunately, due to a storm, the container falls into the sea, and Mia wakes up in the middle of the oceantrapped, desperate but with a sense of survival.

Rummage through items. And with plastic tubes, sweatshirts, trays, lighters, knives, he transforms the cages into a new habitat. Meanwhile – having a telephone – he tries to ask for help, but the line comes and goes. But it happens that one day Nico manages to call her. He managed to escape from her and promises that he will come to save her. Before closing, he tells her the phrase they are used to: “I love you more than yesterday, but less than tomorrow.”

The wait for help, however, becomes more complicated: Mia is in fact now nine months pregnant, and one night, in the middle of the storm, she gives birth to Noa. This is where real survival begins. Every time she is at the end of her strength and in the grip of hallucinations, she manages to regain clarity thanks to the awareness of having a newborn baby in her hands, to whom she speaks and shows photos of himself and his family.

He talks to her especially about Uma, his other daughter who “wanted to be an airplane pilot”. The daughter she lost due to a frivolity, satisfying her on an outing from home when the regime specifically prohibited women and children from walking in the open air. Five minutes that cost Uma her life.

Nowhereending and review

The story of Nowhere – with totalitarian Spain, i.e. a subverted democracy – has more than one analogy with the current situation regarding the Mediterranean and migratory flows. At the center of the film, in fact, there is not only the story of a mother ready to do anything to save herself and her daughter from certain death. There is also the hope of those who leave their homes in search of a safe place.

Directed by Albert Pintó, it shows the desperation that becomes stronger than any fear. And it comes as powerful as a slap. Although the representation of survival inside the container may seem fictionalized at times, Anna Castillo is perfect as Mia. Intense, one look is enough for her to communicate all the tragedy that has affected her character.
