Jonas Omlin is leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach after three and a half years and returning to his former club FC Basel. The 32-year-old, who was on loan at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the second half of the season and still had a contract with the Fohlen until 2027, signed with the top Swiss club until 2029.

Omlin wore the Basel jersey from 2018 to 2020 before he ended up in Gladbach via Montpellier HSC. There he initially developed into captain, but then lost his regular place to Moritz Nicolas and was last in goal on matchday 34 of the 2024/25 season. The loan to Leverkusen didn’t bring any improvement either, where he had to be content with being number three behind Mark Flekken and Janis Blaswich and remained unused.

“It was an intensive and formative three years at Borussia for me,” says Omlin on the Gladbach homepage. “I will gratefully remember the experiences and moments that I was able to experience with my teammates, the staff, the great fans and everyone in the club, even if overall things didn’t go as well as I had hoped. I wish all of Borussia only the best for the future!”

In Basel he inherits former Bundesliga goalkeeper Marwin Hitz, who is ending his career. “It feels a bit like coming home for me, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the great fans in the Joggeli again. I have a lot of positive memories of FCB. I was able to win my first title with the team here and my performances at FCB helped me to be recommended for a squad in the national team and for a commitment abroad. Now I’m really looking forward to returning with a full backpack of experience and helping FCB fight for titles again.”
