DFB Cup draw: FC Bayern in luck – BVB against TSG Hoffenheim

2nd round on October 31st and 1.11.

The 16 matches in the second round of the DFB Cup were drawn on Sunday evening at the German Football Museum in Dortmund. Champions FC Bayern are visiting third division team 1. FC Saarbrücken, runners-up Borussia Dortmund are playing against TSG Hoffenheim as they did last in the Bundesliga, only this time in front of their own audience. The reigning cup winners RB Leipzig meet VfL Wolfsburg away. The second cup round will take place on October 31st and November 1st, 2023.

“Absolutely awesome, yes,” said Saarbrücken coach Rüdiger Ziehl about FC Bayern’s task. He is looking forward to the “great opponent”, but “difficult to deal with”.

Shkodran Mustafi, world champion in 2014 and currently without a club, drew the lots. DFB Vice President Peter Frymuth was in charge of the draw. Six teams were represented in the amateur pot (3rd league or lower): Saarbrücken, Bielefeld, Viktoria Köln, Unterhaching, Sandhausen and Homburg.

The round of 16 will take place on December 5th and 6th, with the remaining rounds taking place next year. The final in the Berlin Olympic Stadium is scheduled for May 25, 2024. The record winner of the competition is FC Bayern (20 titles) ahead of Werder Bremen (five).

DFB Cup: Which teams are or were there – regulations for 2023/24

In addition to the 36 professional clubs from the federal leagues, the four top teams from last season in the 3rd league also qualified for the 2023/24 DFB Cup. Since SC Freiburg II is not eligible to take part, Saarbrücken moved up to fifth place in the third division. There were also the 21 state cup winners and a team each from Bavaria, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. These are the regional associations of the German Football Association with the largest number of members. Since the local cup finalists Elversberg and Saarbrücken in Saarland had already qualified in the 3rd league, FC Homburg moved up, winning a playoff and surprisingly knocking out SV Darmstadt 98 in the first round.
