The season isn’t over yet, but there’s already a celebration: the SCM presented the championship trophy to its fans on the town hall balcony.

Although the season is not yet over, the handball players from SC Magdeburg celebrated their third championship under head coach Bennet Wiegert on Monday at the invitation of Mayor Simone Borris. After the team was entered into the Golden Book of the city of Magdeburg, the team presented the championship trophy on the town hall balcony in front of thousands of fans.

“It’s special every time you win something. And the Bundesliga is the hardest league in the world and we did it again this year,” said Norwegian SCM captain Christian O’Sulivan, who has played for Magdeburg since 2016 and is now leaving the club.

Outstanding season

With only four minus points (one defeat, two draws) and the strongest defense and the most effective attack lines, the SCM was crowned champions with a nine-point lead before the end of the season.

Wiegert: “It feels a little different”

For SCM coach Wiegert, who is experiencing the celebration on the town hall balcony for the sixth time in six years, the day is still something special, even if this constellation has not existed before, because next weekend the final round of the Champions League will take place in Cologne, where the SCM will start the race as defending champions.

“We’re happy, even though the season isn’t over for us yet. It feels a little different and yet when you see the enthusiasm there is, it’s something extraordinary for handball standards. This is also the stage for the players, they’ve achieved this, they’ve won this. And they should be as happy as possible and let themselves be celebrated.”

SCM before title defense

After the celebrations, the SCM continues intensive preparation for the Final4 semi-final on Saturday (June 13) in Cologne against Füchse Berlin. Should Magdeburg emerge victorious, the final awaits on Sunday (June 14th). Possible opponents are the Spanish star ensemble FC Barcelona or the Danish top team Aalborg Handbold.
