Loved by Finns, The Beautiful and the Brave would be nothing without its flamboyant red-headed villain, Sally Spectra. The fashion house owned by Teräsruva was in bloody competition with the Forresters’ fashion house, and clashes were inevitable. Originally, the role was seen for years Darlene Conleywho died tragically at the age of 72 in 2007.
Conley, that Irish-American force of nature, of course starred in other TV series and even movies, but his most memorable role is as the main villain of The Brave and the Bold. He played the role from 1989 until his death.
Born in Chicago, Conley’s acting talents were already noticed at the age of 15. As a young girl, Conley was co-starred on Broadway with greats such as Basil Rathbone and of Richard Chamberlain. His first film role was Alfred Hitchcock in the classic Birds.
However, his career actually began in small roles on TV in the early 1980s, and Conley practically guested in almost all other soap operas of that time, from Sentiments and scents to Päivien viemää, until he got the role of his life. A 20-year role in The Brave and the Bold earned him two Daytime Emmy nominations and six Soap Opera Digest nominations.
Sally Spectra piloted a fiercely competing fashion house in the series, plotted benefits for herself, fought with Stephanie Forrester about this and that, and controlled her adult daughter Macy Alexander’s life and her male patterns with a lioness’ grip. Spectra, among other things, copies its own cheap copies of Forrester’s fashion creations.
One of the most memorable episodes is the one where Spectra gets drunk with her arch nemesis Stephanie, after which Sally ends up cutting Stephanie’s hair. You can see the video below or from here.
The actress herself was proud of her character.
– Sally challenges what a middle-aged woman should look like and how she should behave. He behaves impulsively, unlike many characters in soap operas. Often you are either good or bad. Sally maximizes drama in every way, Darlene Conley commented to the Chicago Tribune in 1992.
– When I read the plot of the series, I knew that this woman was here to stay. The public would come to love him. I created the role in four years. I gave it my all, he continued.
Over the years, he became friends with other stars who played in the series.
The story continues after the pictures.

Illness stopped me
Darlene Conley’s career took a shocking turn when she was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2006.
He died of the disease a year later. Known for the role of Ridge Forrester Ron Moss told in 2017 Ilta-Sanom Conley died in his arms.
– I was in the bedroom with the two Darlenes. I said we all loved him—I gave him permission to go. He died in my arms. I felt that his spirit passed through me, Moss recalled to Ilta-Sanom.
The character of Sally Spectra still exists in The Bold and the Beautiful. Her absence is explained in the series by the fact that Sally has gone on vacation to St. Tropez for an extended period of time. The writers didn’t want to kill off a “larger-than-life character”, so according to the plot, she enjoys her life in resorts in the company of young, handsome men. The Spectra fashion house is sold to Nick and Jackie Marone in the plot twists of the series.
In 2017, the Beautiful and the Bold introduced a new Sally Spectra, who plays Courtney Hope. She is a related girl of the original Sally and continued to follow her role model in scheming in the series.
