Diabetes, free training course starts

In Perugia, from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th February, 80 people with diabetes from all over Italy will return to school to learn essential notions that help manage the daily balance between nutrition and insulin injections. The course is called “I, the person who counts”, organized by Fand-Italian Diabetics Association, the largest diabetes association in Italy comprising 120 federated associations, it is the first in a series of initiatives designed to train people with diabetes.

The course, offered free of charge by Fand-Italian Diabetics Association, leaves only the travel costs to the participants. Its realization was made possible thanks to the non-conditioning contribution of Medtronic and Meteda, companies that offer innovative and technologically advanced technological solutions for healthcare, diabetes and nutrition.

How much is the training of people with diabetes needed

“It is a qualifying project for Fand which since the last National Assembly has established a concrete renewal that aims at the realization of appointments mainly dedicated to the training of people with diabetes – declared the President Emilio Augusto Benini -. We mean train the patientnot only for himself and for everything he needs in managing his illness. It will be our care to proceed towards the training that will allow people with diabetes to devote themselves to others, to make up for those shortcomings that are increasingly recorded in health facilities including diabetes “.

Learn the rules of counting

They participate in the implementation of the program diabetologists, dieticians and experienced diabetics. «We are going to train patients by giving them essential elements for the management of the disease – explained Manuela Bertaggia, Vice President of Fand and organizational manager of the course -. And the calculation of carbohydrates is one of them. From our social groups and from the emails that arrive at the association we register a large number of people with diabetes who either do not know, or have forgotten it, but need to learn the rules of counting. We do not blame those who do not teach how to count carbohydrates, we simply take note of the difficulties that exist, of the little time that doctors have to devote themselves to the myriad of patients of which Italian diabetics are full. Let’s be clear, we don’t want to replace anyone. We only do what we can and what we know how to do ».
