They know why they are doing it. And they are there. Along the route, in the procession or behind the scenes. Prinsjesdag is therefore one of the most important ceremonies in the Netherlands. And with around 2,000 soldiers you can create something beautiful. This happened again today at the opening of the parliamentary year in The Hague.
Well prepared
The orders and commands are clear. With words such as dismount location, vehicle packages and CSM task, the soldiers know what they have to do. And nothing is left to chance. Everyone knows: the king and society expect a lot from us.
The soldiers from all over the country gather early. For most of them, this happens in the football stadium in The Hague, where they dress and are given food and drinks.
Speech from the throne about Defense
Today, appreciation was once again expressed for the work that the armed forces do day and night. King Willem-Alexander in the Speech from the Throne:
“Due to the great importance of a strong NATO and a strong defense apparatus, the government will continue with the planned additional investments in the armed forces. Our support and thanks go out to our soldiers who work for peace and security worldwide.”
Special attention was paid to Russia’s illegal war of aggression in Ukraine.
“A battle is raging on Europe’s eastern border for fundamental democratic and rule of law values. This battle also affects our own security and future.”
Ceremonial as a symbol
The presence of the armed forces on Budget Day symbolizes the protection that Defense offers on a daily basis to freedom, democracy and a strong rule of law.
In and along the route
The honorary cordon on the route from Noordeinde Palace consists of units of the armed forces. They also include reservists, veterans, volunteers and a civilian representation.
In addition to the honorary deposition, Defense contributes to the driving tour, together with the police. Furthermore, the so-called Yellow Riders give minute shots with their howitzers at the Malieveld. There are ceremonial double posts at the doors of the palace and the theater. On horseback and in front of the procession, the Governor of the Residence inspects the troops before the king passes by. Military bands make an important contribution and make the spectacle extra festive.
Once the Royal Procession has returned, the soldiers also return to their bases and barracks. Or as it is stated in the order: their peace locations.
