The Ethiopian 10,000 meter world champion Gudaf Tsegay is the new world record holder in the 5000 meter. The 26-year-old won the Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday in 14:00.21 minutes.

Tsegay beat the previous record set by Kenyan Faith Kipyegon (14:05.20) from June this year by almost five seconds. Kenyan Beatrice Chebet came second behind Tsegay in Eugene in 14:05.92, the third fastest time so far.

Tsegay triumphed over 5000 m at the World Championships in 2022 at the same place. A year later she won twice the distance in Budapest, but only came 13th over 5000 m.
