Mole control? Even in autumn

TOWhen returning from holidays it is a good idea to undergo the mole mapping. In fact, the sun is the most important risk factor for the onset of skin cancerie in summer the skin’s exposure to sun rays is greater.

Mole control after summer

«Particularly if you have fair skin and are prone to sunburn, after the summer season a check-up by the dermatologist is recommended» says Giuseppe Argenziano, president of the Italian Society of Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (SIDeMaST).

«Those who have many moles, due to a natural genetic predisposition, must take extra care. In 30 percent of cases, melanoma can arise from a pre-existing molebut more frequently, 70 percent of the time, it originates from a new mole. Great attention should be paid to moles with a diameter greater than 6 mm. Mole mapping, for those who have many of them, is recommended once a year. Once every three years is enough for those who have few moles, after it has been ascertained that they are benign.

Dermatologist Inspecting Patient Skin Moles with Dermatoscope and Camera

There are no dangers for children and teenagers because Melanoma under the age of 18 is an exceptional event. But children must still be protected from sunburn to avoid problems as adults: skin burns in childhood and adolescence predispose to the onset of this tumor, even after many years, because the epidermis is able to “memorize” the damage caused by sunburn accumulated over time. AND it is therefore essential to avoid them, to avoid serious problems in the long term».
