Franconian derby ends without a winner

1. FC Nürnberg and SpVgg Greuther Fürth separated without a winner in the 271st Frankenderby and are therefore still falling short of expectations in the 2nd Bundesliga. At the start of the sixth matchday, the traditional duel ended 1:1 (1:1), meaning that the two rivals each missed the hoped-for step forward.

Damian Michalski (8th) scored early for Fürth, who had previously won five of the six most recent games in Nuremberg. Can Uzun (45th + 1) equalized with a penalty kick. With eight points, Nuremberg moved up to ninth place for the time being, Fürth (5) is 13th with just one win. It was the 50th draw between the two teams, Nuremberg is clearly ahead of Fürth (79) with 140 wins – two games were canceled .

In front of 47,000 spectators in the sold-out Max Morlock Stadium, both teams wanted to take revenge for their poor performances before the international break: FCN lost 3-1 in Kaiserslautern and Fürth lost to Hannover with the same result. However, the visitors started bolder and were rewarded early on by Michalski, who headed home from Julian Green’s corner.

VAR penalty for the club

After that, the home team got stronger, but didn’t play well enough. During Nuremberg’s equalizer, the video referee had to help make the decision after Fürth’s Orestis Kiomourtzoglou brought down club captain Florian Hübner. Only after studying the TV pictures was Uzun allowed to convert from the point. In the long injury time, Nuremberg should have taken the lead, but Fürth goalkeeper Andreas Linde made an outstanding save from Taylan Duman (45th + 4).

In the second half, both teams exchanged blows with an intensity worthy of a derby. But the compelling chances didn’t materialize.
