BZ editor Sabine Klier on the founding of the Foundation to Promote Freedom and Democracy by Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer.

Margot Friedländer is 101 years old – and never tires of fighting against oblivion. The Holocaust survivor has now founded a foundation to promote freedom and democracy.

“We can’t change what happened, but it must never happen again,” she said. “Never again should a single person be subjected to what was done to people back then because people were not recognized as people.”

I find your commitment admirable. With her foundation she wants to ensure that her life’s work lives on even after her death. She regularly attends school classes and lives for the culture of remembrance. She is deeply human.

Margot Friedländer is a living legend. I hope she lives long enough to tell her story!
