Record warmest September night ever broken in the Netherlands

The night from Saturday to Sunday will go down as the warmest September night ever measured in the Netherlands. In Vlissingen it did not get colder than 21.1 degrees, which resulted in a second rare tropical night for this month.

Never before has the minimum temperature in September at an official measuring point in our country been as high as it was in Vlissingen on Sunday, Weeronline said on Monday. The weather bureau explains that it could only be said with certainty on Monday that the record had been broken, because it had to be waited to see whether it would get colder late on Sunday evening. The minimum temperature is measured from midnight to midnight UTC, which is from 2 a.m. to 2 a.m. in the Netherlands.

The old record for warmest September night is 20.9 degrees and was recorded on September 5, 1949 in Maastricht and on September 14, 2016 in Den Helder. The new record means there are two tropical nights this month: last Wednesday it was no colder than 20.4 degrees in Vlissingen. A night is considered tropical if the temperature does not drop below 20 degrees. It is rare for this to happen in September. It also remained mild elsewhere on the coast in recent nights. This is due to the warm sea water, which is always at its warmest at the end of summer.

Next night

It was also warm on the night from Sunday to Monday, but early in the morning it became colder than 20 degrees in many places. In Vlissingen it was 20.2 degrees. It will remain warm at around 16 degrees next night, but another tropical night is not an option. 16 degrees is still warm, according to Weeronline, because it is normally around 10 degrees at night this time of year. Next week the minimum temperature will drop further to 10 to 14 degrees on the coast to 6 degrees in the east.
