A masterpiece. Without the possibility of discussion. Because of this the return to Italian cinemas of David Lynch’s 1999 film, in a new restored edition and subtitled thanks to the Cineteca di Bologna, it is an opportunity not to be missed. And those who may fear the “dark side” (and sometimes cryptic) of the director should know that This film is crystal clear and readable.

It tells the journey that a 73-year-old farmer decides to take from Iowa to Wisconsin to find his brother with whom he broke off relations ten years ago and who suffered a heart attack.

Richard Farnsworth during the journey of “A True Story”.

And since he doesn’t have a driving license (and can’t afford big expenses) makes the journey aboard an old and slow motor mower which resembles a miniature tractor: six weeks marked by many curious encounters to accompany the spectator in discovering (and being amazed by) the big and small things in life, a perfect antidote in the name of Whitman and Hawthorne to the superficiality of so much effect cinema, capable to reflect on death, on family, on memory and together on the frontier and the American landscape.

Which Freddie Francis’ photography and Angelo Badalamenti’s music exalt to the highest degree. Exactly: a masterpiece. For those who still know how to be amazed by the beauty of cinema.
