Basketball World Cup, Italy qualifies for the quarter-finals if: the possible combinations

Puerto Rico’s victory over the Dominican Republic gives group I a thrilling final, with all four teams on 7 points. Here are the possible qualifying scenarios for Pozzecco’s national team

From our correspondent Davide Romani

On the first day of the second phase of the World Cup in Manila, in group I Italy overcame Serbia 78-76, while Puerto Rico defeated the Dominican Republic 102-97. Two results that shuffle the cards: at the moment all 4 teams find themselves with the same balance: 3 wins and 1 defeat. The two matches on Sunday will therefore be decisive – Italy-Puerto Rico and Serbia-Dominican Republic – to decide the two teams that will access the quarter-finals scheduled for 5 (for the part of the draw that interests the Azzurri) and 6 September at the Mall of Asia.

SCENARIOS

At this point there are no calculations to make for the national team. With a victory (Sunday at 10) against Puerto Rico Italy is sure of the passage to the quarterfinals. It remains to be seen whether with first or second place. In the event of Serbia’s victory over the Dominican Republic (Sunday at 2 pm), the Azzurri will enter the knockout phase as first and will cross the second of group J (one between the USA and Lithuania) while Serbia passes from second. Assuming that the Caribbean manage to stop Bogdanovic’s team, the Dominican Republic will go first with the Azzurri second and Pesic’s team eliminated.
