On August 24, Ukraine celebrated its Independence Day. Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the large-scale invasion of February 2022, Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian aggression. That is why Minister Hoekstra of Foreign Affairs and Ukrainian ambassador Oleksandr Karasevych hoisted the flag of Ukraine together in The Hague. The minister also gave a speech.
What is Ukrainian Independence Day?
On August 24, 1991, the Ukrainian Parliament declared independence, separating Ukraine from the Soviet Union. Later that year, on December 1, over 90% voted for Ukrainian independence/separation. Since then, Ukraine has celebrated Independence Day every year.
Ukraine fights for freedom and security of all Europe
Unfortunately, Ukraine’s independence cannot be taken for granted. Currently, Ukraine is still defending itself against Russian aggression. With this, Ukraine is not only fighting for its own freedom and security, but also for that of the whole of Europe.
This year Ukraine celebrates the 32st Independence Day. In honor of this day, and to continue to emphasize support for Ukraine, the Dutch provincial flags on the Hofvijver in The Hague were replaced by the Ukrainian flag.
Minister Hoekstra of Foreign Affairs and Ukrainian ambassador to the Netherlands Oleksandr Karasevych hoisted the flag together, while the national anthem of Ukraine was sung. The Ukrainian national anthem was also played on this day in many other European countries. Ambassadors from other countries, the Mayor of The Hague Jan van Zanen, and Ukrainians who have lived in the Netherlands since the war were also present at the occasion at the Hofvijver.
Minister Hoekstra: The Netherlands will continue to support Ukraine
In a short speech, Minister Hoekstra repeated the most important Dutch message. We will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes: with humanitarian aid, economic and financial support, military supportand with the reception of Ukrainian refugees.
