Fate for Spain’s heroine Carmona

Spain’s new soccer heroine Olga Carmona (23) suffered a private stroke of fate on the day of the World Cup triumph in Australia.

The father of the captain and final goalscorer died on Sunday, the Spanish football association RFEF said in the evening in “deep sorrow”.

“The player received the sad news after the World Cup final,” the statement read: “We send our sincere condolences to Olga and her family at a moment of deepest pain. We love you Olga, you are part of the history of Spanish soccer.”

Spain had defeated European champions England 1-0 (1-0) in the final and thus won the title for the first time. Carmona (29th) decided the game with a left-footed shot into the far corner.
