What is involved in taking care of a sick harbor porpoise? NH was allowed to come and have a look

It’s busy at SOS Dolfijn: last Wednesday harbor porpoise Jack was found on the beach of Texel and that means, partly due to a shortage of volunteers, that all sails have to be made. The harbor porpoise needs care 24 hours a day and that is intensive, also noted by reporter Jelmer Vlot, who was allowed to walk along for a day.

The porpoise was found on the beach of Texel last Wednesday, after it had probably been lying in the burning sun for hours. The harbor porpoise is so weak that it can no longer swim independently. To ensure that the animal survives, there is a volunteer to guide him 24 hours a day.

To demand

That is also the crux: it is very difficult for SOS Dolfijn to find volunteers. According to animal caretaker Mariëlle Staal, this is because people have a big list of requirements must comply. In addition, it is difficult to find people who want to walk through the basin with the porpoise in the middle of the night.

Despite the help of the volunteers, it is still too early to say whether Jack will survive, Mariëlle says: “It is a fighter, you can see that immediately. So let’s hope for a good outcome!”
