Tennis professional Alexander Zverev has for the first time publicly defended himself against the allegation of bodily harm made against him. “I reject that completely. My lawyers will take care of the matter,” said the man from Hamburg on Monday in the Hanseatic city.

The 26-year-old added that he did not want to say more about the matter. On July 7, the Berlin public prosecutor’s office applied for a penalty order based on this allegation. The allegedly injured person is Zverev’s ex-partner Brenda Patea. In a statement, the Tiergarten District Court expressly referred to the presumption of innocence for Zverev.

There had already been allegations of violence against Zverev from another ex-girlfriend, Olga Sharipova. In the summer of 2021, the Olympic champion obtained a court order that the Russian was no longer allowed to make such allegations. The player organization ATP acquitted Zverev after an independent investigation.

Opening match on Tuesday

The local hero will take part in the sporting events for the first time on Tuesday at the event, which is endowed with 630,000 euros. In his opening match, Zverev meets Slovakian Alex Molcan for the third time within a few weeks. The Hamburg seeded number four had the upper hand both at the French Open in Paris and last week in Bastad, Sweden.
