Police Brussels North caught 33 snatch thieves in June | Interior

The Transport Security Brigade (BBV) of the Brussels North police zone (Schaerbeek/Evere/Sint-Joost-ten-Node) was able to catch and arrest 33 speed thieves red-handed in the past month of June. These arrests come on top of the 115 arrests already made by the BBV in the period from January to May 2023. The Brussels public prosecutor’s office reported this today.

Part of the arrests were the work of the POWA team (Prévention/Preventie – Observation/BeWaking – Action/Actie) of the BBV, which applies observation and action methods in the fight against red-handed thefts. Their goal is to act on thefts in the act by detecting them and acting quickly.

For example, on June 3, 2023, the BBV was able to catch three speed thieves red-handed in the Brabantstraat. While the police officers were on patrol, their attention was drawn to three individuals who were behaving suspiciously. The members of the POWA team decided to follow the people involved who were walking at the fair.

When they noticed a lady with an open handbag, one of them tried to distract the victim, allowing his accomplice to run off with the lady’s wallet. As soon as the loot was received, the three suspects quickly tried to flee. At that time, the police officers of the BBV arrested the three individuals for theft in the act. After questioning, the three were released.
