Coach Tore Aleksandersen, who is suffering from prostate cancer, is giving up his position at German volleyball champion Allianz MTV Stuttgart. Due to his treatment, he is not able to raise the necessary “energy level”, said the Norwegian. Konstantin Bitter will look after the team as head coach from the coming season.

Aleksandersen has terminal prostate cancer, already in the past season he had renounced several trips to away games. “Of course I’m very sad that I can no longer be the head coach with immediate effect,” said the 55-year-old.

The treatment is “going well so far,” he said, “but I’m struggling with the side effects that rob me of a lot of energy.”

On May 14, Aleksandersen had the deciding game Championship title at SC Potsdam still witnessed in the gang. “From now on, I have to focus on my own health with the energy that I still have,” he said. However, he will continue to support the club in the new season “as soon as I feel more energy again”.

A “difficult decision” for everyone involved

The club spoke of a difficult decision for everyone involved. “It’s about Tore’s health and he should now focus fully on his treatments,” said sporting director Kim Oszvald-Renkema. Aleksandersen led Stuttgart to the first double in club history in 2022.

Konstantin Bitter will take over his position from the coming season. A few weeks ago, MTV sports director Kim Oszvald-Renkema said that “Konstantin Bitter is a very talented young coach who will be joining us in the future. When exactly, that remains to be seen.” Now the time has come.
