LONDON (Reuters) – In the UK, workers at the country’s second busiest airport plan to go on strike in the middle of the summer holidays, threatening to thwart thousands’ holiday plans.
Around 950 ground staff, passenger and baggage handlers and other employees at Gatwick Airport south of London plan to walk away from work in a first round from July 28 to August 1, the Unite union said on Friday. The second round is planned for August 4th to 8th. This is likely to put the travel plans of thousands of holidaymakers in question during the busiest time of the year.
Disruptions, delays and cancellations would be inevitable, Unite said. The airport operator announced contingency plans to maintain the flight schedule. EasyJet, TUI and British Airways use Gatwick as a hub for leisure flights to southern European holiday destinations, operating hundreds of flights daily.
