Crumbling viaduct A9 still full of holes, but “construction is safe”

The viaduct in Akersloot over the A9 motorway will still look a bit battered for the time being. Last week, pieces of concrete came loose, causing damage to cars and a major traffic jam. You can now see ‘holes’ in three places. “These are places where the concrete has been knocked loose by us”, according to Rijkswaterstaat. “The construction is safe.”

Last week Tuesday Suddenly pieces of concrete came loose from the bottom of the Geesterbrug over the A9. Several cars drove over the debris that had landed on the road, resulting in a large number of flat tires.

The viaduct is next inspected. “Then pieces of concrete were knocked loose in other places. They can be seen when you drive from south to north. Small cracks were also found, but they are not in the construction,” says Rijkswaterstaat spokesman Pieter Zoon.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, it is not possible to say with certainty how it was possible that concrete came loose. “It seems to be about previous repairs. It’s on the outside, the plaster layer. We’re going to smear the holes that are still there so that it looks neat again.”

Injury

When that is has yet to be planned. “We will combine this with other activities in order to limit the nuisance to traffic as much as possible. The viaduct is safe,” says Zoon.

Rijkswaterstaat does not know how many people have damage to their cars. It seemed to be at least five vehicles that Tuesday, but there may be more. “People can report this to their insurance company. They will come to us for compensation.”
