Phoenix Language Center is an institution dedicated to teaching English. “Learning languages goes beyond simply communicating with people from different cultures.
It provides us with a series of benefits and opportunities in various aspects of life. First of all, mastering other languages gives us a competitive advantage in the job market. It makes us more attractive candidates for employers looking for international profiles or with specific language skills, accessing better paid jobs and opening doors for us in different countries and cultures. And most importantly, it allows us to choose for ourselves what we want for our future; and not mastering it definitely limits us. In short, learning other languages expands our chances of success, choice, selection and growth both personally and in the professional area”, says Prof. Carolina Espejo, CEO and founder of the institute.
– Those are the best-known benefits of learning languages. What would be those that are not so obvious to many people?
There are many lesser known, but equally valuable benefits of learning another language. First of all, learning a new language stimulates creativity by challenging our reasoning and our ability to find the right words and the most efficient grammatical structures to communicate, challenging ourselves and taking our brain out of its COMFORT ZONE. Being bilingual also strengthens our problem-solving skills, since the selection and filtering that our brain performs in another language, developing an agile and creative cognitive inhibition skill. Other benefits include increased confidence and self-esteem, greater hearing acuity, better understanding and interpretation of messages, and of course, as I said, more and better job opportunities.
What advice would you give to those who want to improve their level of English when they already have an elementary base?
Improving the level of English requires learning, practice and perseverance. As a first resource we always have to have formal language teaching in a language center like Phoenix or that comes from any professional with a title and endorsed by an institution, because it costs the same job to learn a language badly as to learn it well. And speaking and writing a second language correctly is the best thing that can happen to us and to those who have to understand us.
It is also true that there are many resources for those who want to reinforce or expand their knowledge on the networks, but it is not the only source since there are still not many resources that you can correct phonetics, the correct way of speaking and writing in the process of learning another language.
The advantage of the networks is that today there are, for example, YouTube channels that offer content in authentic English, allowing us to get out of the rigidity of typical classroom English. Some recommended channels are “Learn English with…Tv series/Top Gun”, “Anglo-Link” and “Linguamania”. These channels give us the opportunity to self-manage our learning and acquire new practical skills.
Instagram and TikTok, for their part, have educational influencers like Linguamarina who share tips, explain idioms, teach useful words and structures, and even reveal cultural secrets of the different variants of English, such as American, Australian, South African. , Indian and British English. These platforms are great for improving pronunciation, understanding meaning, and much more.
There are also Apps that, although not all of them are equally effective, offer dictionaries and appropriate meanings for each occasion, all very helpful.
Watching series on Netflix with narration assistance or any other streaming service in the language you want to learn allows you to get used to the language and improve your listening comprehension.
Knowing how to speak another language is magical, definitely. But there are still no formulas that make us learn it from one day to the next. And for that we are here, Phoenix Language Centre, so that you can get the best version of yourself. And for you to fly high with an exquisite language.
