UN organization agrees on new climate targets for shipping

LONDON/HAMBURG (dpa-AFX) – In the fight against climate change, shipping worldwide must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by around 2050. This provides for a decision on which the members of the World Maritime Organization IMO agreed after lengthy consultations in London. Specifically, the new IMO climate strategy presented on Friday states that the aim is to reduce emissions “to zero by 2050 or shortly thereafter, taking into account the different national circumstances”.

The general manager of the shipowners’ association VDR, Martin Kröger, spoke in Hamburg of a “historic day for shipping”. So far, the IMO requirements have only halved emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 by 2050. The shipping industry had long advocated tightening the target./kf/DP/nas
