RB Leipzig and RC Lens agree on Openda transfer – record fee?

Spending exceeds 100 million

RB Leipzig is about to transfer millions and should break the 100 million mark in terms of spending. According to the “LVZ” the “Red Bulls” have reached an agreement with RC Lens on the transfer of desired striker Loïs Openda. With the 23-year-old Belgian, the Saxons had been clear for a long time. The transfer fee, which has now been discussed in the past negotiation rounds, should “significantly exceed the 30 million euros”.

Since his 70 million transfer to Liverpool, Dominik Szoboszlai has held the title as Leipzig’s record signing. His transfer fee recently rose to 36 million euros, the reason for this is the resale participation that flowed to the sister club from Salzburg. Whether Openda will be more expensive is currently still open.

Lens have reportedly asked around €45m so far to let the centre-forward, who is still tied to the club until 2027, leave this summer. RB, on the other hand, is said to have recently offered sums below the Belgian’s market value and not to have exceeded a base fee of EUR 30 million. That seems to have changed now, even if sports director Max Eberl said at the beginning of the week: “We will definitely not pay moon prices.”

With expenses of 68 million euros so far for Benjamin Sesko (20), Christoph Baumgartner (23) and Nicolas Seiwald (22), the 100 million mark in transfer spending is likely to be exceeded. This has only been the case with RB in 2021/22, when Josko Gvardiol (21) and Co. were signed for €107.6m. Globally, only Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Real Madrid have invested more than €100m in new signings this summer (for expenditure statistics).

RB Leipzig bring in a “very versatile player” in Openda

“Openda is a very versatile player who, despite being only 1.77 meters tall, is a threat with both his foot and his head. His style of play goes very well with RC Lens’ tactics, as he is very dynamic and has a good speed that allows him to initiate counterattacks and not just wait for passes,” describes Ronan Caroff, Area Manager France at Transfermarkt. With regard to the designated RB access, Caroff also points out: “He sometimes struggled and didn’t meet for a long time. Then in the spring he made his big breakthrough and since March he has scored twelve of his 21 goals.”
