Breda is preparing to celebrate a so-called ‘café carnival’. No performances in the city center and no outdoor stages, but a party in the cafes. And they can also set up a bar outside. “We can’t celebrate in the way we are used to yet, but we certainly won’t skip it this year.”
The municipality thinks that there will be great enthusiasm among people to return to the city after such a long corona period. “That is why measures have been taken to prevent large crowds in the city center and to spread the public as much as possible over the city and the villages.”
Gradual outflow
The catering industry in Kielegat closes at the times that were also used before the corona crisis: some businesses at two o’clock in the morning and others at four o’clock in the morning. The nightly sandwich shops close at a quarter to five in the morning.
In this way, the municipality hopes that the outflow of the nightlife crowd will be gradual. This should result in less crowds on the street, at the taxi ranks and the pick-up point for the so-called ‘Outbuses’, which this year will depart from Karnemelkstraat.
Walk or cycle
For safety reasons, glassware is prohibited in the hospitality industry and in public spaces during Carnival. “This will be strictly enforced,” the municipality warns. If you need medical help, you can go to the first aid post on Stadserf.
In the context of safety, carnival celebrants are asked to walk or cycle to the cafes in Kielegat as much as possible. To be able to store all these bicycles, people can not only go to the fixed free bicycle sheds, but also to a number of pop-up locations.
‘Double and straight of enjoyment!’
“We are pleased that the municipality is making it possible, within the space that is available, to make it a great party this year,” responds Johan de Vos of the Breda department of Koninklijke Horeca Nederland. ready and can’t wait to see things fill up with guests again.”
He is supported by Lucien Verhoef of the Kielegat foundation: “Despite the fact that we have yet to abandon a number of beautiful traditions, we are very happy that from Kielegat buzzing again. The fact that so surprisingly precisely so much can be done with carnival, gives us a carnival feeling that we will enjoy twice!“
