Alvaro Morte He walks his path with an unwavering conviction mixed with a hint of pride, the wisdom of accepting what cannot be changed, and an inevitable resignation in the face of truths that have no remedy.
He knows that in every place he goes he will be remembered as The Professor of “The Money Heist”, the series that allowed her an international tour and opened up the possibility of accessing various job opportunities. In 2012 he founded a theater company called “300 pistols”. He then came to the world of streaming and cinema.
At 48, this father of twins still has his rock spirit. An amateur golfer, music lover and lover of cooking, he treasures an invaluable collection of musical instruments.
Álvaro Morte is someone who values the passage of time and does not want to waste it. In an interview with the “El Faro” program of Cadena SER, he recalled the cancer that he suffered fifteen years ago, which was lodged in his left thigh. A malignant tumor, with a very worrying diagnosis, as he confessed to the journalist Mara Torres: “They told me that they were cutting off my leg or that they didn’t know how much I had left,” he admitted. Fortunately everything went very well. Although it sounds paradoxical, Morte clung to life.
On the other hand, it does not stop working. She filmed in Rome the movie “Immaculate”, a horror story. Due to those ironies of fate, Morte coincided with Chino Darín in “During the storm”, and now he came to present “Objects”who stars alongside the china suarez.
When he arrives for the meeting with the press, he personally greets everyone present. Well disposed to talk, affable and polite, he tries to make the most of the time he was assigned to talk to NEWS.
News: You were born in Algeciras and grew up in a town in Córdoba, in Andalusia. If you could recover an object from your childhood that you lost, what would it be?
Alvaro Morte: Oysters, what a complicated question! Well, look, this film is about some people who treat others as objects, and yet the character of Mario gives objects a certain life. What I would recover from my childhood is not an object but the summers with my grandparents, that is what I carry in my heart forever.
News: You are known for large-scale projects such as “La casa de papel”, “Sin límites”, or “La rueda del tiempo”. What was it like to make this more intimate thriller, almost an indie film like “Objects”?
Death: It gave us the opportunity to investigate from another place, based on the trust I have with director Jorge Dorado, we had worked together before, we are friends. And this is how you can take your work to non-professional places and to hours that exceed work, then it has been enjoyed from another place. The creation allowed both of us to get into slightly more risky territories, and that sometimes massive streaming doesn’t let you do it while a slightly smaller film enables you to explore those ins and outs, that’s the big difference.
News: Something interesting is that his character, Mario, is a man with simple ambitions, he doesn’t want to be an action hero, he wants to have a family, to be a father. In the cinema in general, the characters are moved by great causes, Mario in that aspect is more humble.
Death: Yes, what’s more, I think that in fact it doesn’t end up having a clear objective. At the beginning of the film he cannot find his own life, he is a man who works in a lost and found office and he is the first to be lost. It is true that as a result of what is happening, beyond the rescue mission that he has in front of him, I think that the first thing he has to rescue is himself.
News: He had to share scenes with several Argentine actors, China Suárez, Daniel Aráoz, Selva Alemán. How was the relationship with them?
Death: I was looking forward to working with them because high-quality Argentine cinema arrives in Spain and I knew several of them. I didn’t know China before, we met directly on the set, but Daniel and Selva have such impressive careers, then it turns out that you meet them and humanly they are incredible, they are great companions. It was a wonderful enjoyment to share scenes with them and to be able to learn, of course.
News: In the preview there was much talk about the chemistry of the leading couple with China Suárez. Can chemistry be built or does it have to be born naturally?
Death: I think it’s like when you ask if you were born with talent, regardless of whether you have it, you always have to try to work. The same thing happens with chemistry, sometimes it occurs naturally, other times you have to work to find it, but I think that we have been able to make the film very comfortable and that we have generated a chemistry that can be seen on the screen. That is what is important after all because it is what has to reach the viewer.
News: Now we are in Buenos Aires but you have also filmed in Jujuy. What places in our country did you like the most?
Death: We were shooting here for about two weeks, the first was in Buenos Aires and the second in Jujuy. On the way there I convinced the producer to go to the Iguazú Falls for a weekend, that was wonderful of course. Nor could I stay with just one place, because the Capital has absolutely magnificent sites and there is that bustle of Buenos Aires that seems charming to me. In addition, all that part of Jujuy, the Altiplano with that landscape so extreme and attractive at the same time… I can’t keep just one thing.
News: There is a lot of exchange between Spanish and Argentine actors, Rodrigo de la Serna was in “La casa de papel”, Leo Sbaraglia and Ricardo Darín also work a lot in Spain. What can Spanish actors contribute to Argentine cinema and Argentines to Spanish cinema?
Death: I do not know exactly, but I think that this miscegenation, this collaboration between Spain and Argentina, comes to us in a relatively natural way.We get a lot out of that. Argentina has shown for many years that its talent and Spanish actors love working with Argentine actors.
News: He has done many very popular series that were seen all over the world, he will be part of the Aztec Batman and he has just filmed a movie with Sidney Sweeney. Is your goal for him to project himself towards an international career?
Death: Well, I do not aspire to that specifically, but it is true that life is leading me a little towards that path. A few years ago you had to try to get out of your environment to do something larger at the production level, today everything is more globalized, you can make very good productions everywhere. In order to be able to decide which project to get into, I do not base it on whether it is more or less international, but rather on the fact that I am interested in who is going to tell it, which is the hand that will take the lead in terms of direction. It is true that certain opportunities that have appeared to me have been very interesting, such as the work with Sidney Sweeney for which I am very happy and grateful, but I do not have the objective of going international and forgetting the national.
News: Now there is a relief, do you no longer think about paying the rent or the phone ringing again?
Death: Well yes, it is true that my life in that sense is simpler than a few years ago, but We don’t have to get carried away by that either, because being down one day and up another is part of the actor’s game. The day you think you have it all done or that you have your life solved, I think you are lost.
News: Morte is his artistic surname, it means death in Portuguese and Italian. Why did you choose it?
Death: It’s the last name of a great friend, I thought it sounded good. It’s true that it has that connotation and at first some people squint a bit (laughs), but as soon as you hear it three times it no longer has that meaning, I just liked it, there’s not much else.
News: On his Instagram account he paid a very nice tribute to Foo Fighters and their drummer Taylor Hawkins. You are a music lover, at some point would you like to make a musical film?
Death: Yes, I really like music. I would love to play many more instruments and be more understood. I would love to do a musical, of course I do!
