Review: Metronomy :: Small World

As lazy as one can find anniversary pressings, it was fitting that Metronomy reissued their album THE ENGLISH RIVIERA in 2021. After all, her masterpiece had a lot to do with nostalgia when it was released in 2011, with a longing for times and places that maybe never existed. And so it goes on. On the cover of their new studio album SMALL WORLD is a shot of singer Joe Mount’s mother: a garden photo taken near the British town where Mount grew up

There’s also frothy organs, funk and disco light, soft pop and rock cuddling, as the Australian Berlin Parcels have perfected in a somewhat more mannered but also more consistent form. “It feels so good to be back / But our love is gone,” says the song “Good To Be Back,” and the line would of course have been a great gag if the album had sucked – but it’s nice that Metronomy are back to long for other days.
