To obtain the minimum mark and pass the EBAU, it is not necessary to pass all the exams of the general phase, since an arithmetic average is made between the four marks

The life of a person from a succession of chapters that we are writing every day, with each decision we make. One of the passages that is usually etched in the memory of many is that of the Selectividad, a test that torments thousands of students every year in our country.

The dreaded test, which tests the nerves of the students every summer, is the last challenge to be able to access the university degree. Those who manage to overcome it with the grade they need will be able to move forward with their goals and dreams. The average number of passes in Spain it was 93.57% in 2022.

Due to the call for general elections on 23-J, high school students have faced some exams that preserve the previous modelsince the Ministry of Universities has considered that the decision on the new legislation in this regard should remain in the hands of the government that comes out of the polls.

But, what happens to those people who fail one of the exams that make up the High School Assessment for University Access (EBAU)? There are many doubts that surround students who find themselves in this situation, therefore, here we point out information that may be of interest.

When is selectivity suspended?

First of all, we have to make it clear that the EBAU is suspended when 4 points are not obtained in the general phase or when the weighted average between the qualification of the general phase (40%) and the average mark of the high school academic record (60 %) is less than 5.

Do I have to pass all the EBAU exams?

To obtain the minimum grade and pass the EBAU it is not necessary to pass all the exams of the general phase. What we do have to achieve is that the arithmetic mean of the four exams exceed 4. Therefore, it is not essential to pass each and every one of the exams if we manage to compensate some notes with others.

Selectivity is not the only path to university. | Alfonso Duran

The same does not happen in the specific phase, in which the student has the option of facing two to four subjects that they choose themselves. Being a voluntary phase, the classifications that are not have the same importance as the mandatory ones. In fact, they will only be taken into account for the arithmetic mean the two subjects with the highest mark. In this optional phase, which is only taken into account if we have passed the general phase, each of the subjects is considered passed only if a grade equal to or greater than 5 out of 10 is obtained.

Can you access the University without passing the EBAU?

No. To access the university it is necessary to pass the EBAU. For this, 4 points or more must be obtained and the weighted average between the qualification of the general phase of selectivity (40%) and the average grade of the high school academic record (60%) must be equal to or greater than 5 points. .

We cannot forget that, in case of failing an exam, there is always the possibility possibility to review the test. In the event that the student considers the grade unfair, she has the opportunity and the right to have another teacher correct the exam again.

The validity time of the marks of both phases is also different. While the mandatory phase is valid indefinitely and the grade can only increase if the student reapplies, the voluntary phase is valid for two academic years from the moment the exams are passed.

If some subjects are passed in June and others are not, do they all have to be repeated in July?

If the general phase of the first call is suspended, Yeah. If the arithmetic mean of the four exams of the compulsory phase does not reach 4 points, the EBAU will be considered failed. Therefore, in each call the four exercises that make up the general phase must be performed.

But, we must remember that in many cases it is not enough to pass the selectivity to access many degrees, but it must be pass the cut-off mark set by the university. Also, it is important to remember that selectivity is not the only path to university. So, if you don’t get the required grade, it’s not the end of the world. We can, for example, carry out Vocational Training related to the career we want to study and then make the leap to a university degree with the marks obtained in said FP.
