There are still many unanswered questions about the goalkeeper position at VfB Stuttgart. Actually, the Swabians wanted to sign a keeper from BVB. However, according to a recent media report, this suggestion does not seem to have led to success. So what’s next in the T-question?
Alexander Meyer already played for VfB Stuttgart between August 2017 and July 2019, more precisely: he was under contract with the Swabians during this time. Because for a game in the licensed team it was not enough for the goalkeeper at that time. Only four games in the second representation were granted to the 1.95 meter man.
According to the latest rumours, that should actually change, because VfB Stuttgart was planning to bring Meyers back, who has meanwhile ended up at Borussia Dortmund. The 32-year-old was between the posts a total of twelve times last season due to the injury to regular keeper Gregor Kobel, including five times in the Champions League.
Because he consistently showed decent performances at BVB, Meyer was suddenly back in Stuttgart to compete as a regular keeper.
But nothing will come of it. Because Borussia Dortmund does not give the goalkeeper a release, as “Bild” reports. In Dortmund they are so satisfied with the performances of the 32-year-old that VfB got a clear basket from the BVB bosses. It is conceivable that BVB will soon extend Meyer’s contract, which only runs until 2024.
In addition, Meyer himself feels comfortable in Dortmund, as it would continue, and probably only with the prospect of number one status would return to VfB. But there is no such guarantee.
T-question at VfB Stuttgart still open
In Stuttgart, meanwhile, the focus is on a competitive battle that VfB professional Fabian Bredlow and another external candidate should face. In the last season, which VfB ended just above relegation with relegation, Bredlow was in goal in 15 Bundesliga games, replacing Florian Müller in the spring, who was previously between the posts.
According to “Bild”, Müller, on the other hand, is about to return to SC Freiburg. The Swabians should get 1.5 million euros for the 25-year-old. In the coming days, the quasi-fixed transfer should officially take place.
So whoever climbs into the goalkeeper ring with Bredlow is still open. The 17-year-old top talent Dennis Seimen, who came from the youth, should be introduced slowly and will probably be the third keeper. The 22-year-old Florian Schock, however, should be awarded.
