The fire that raged in the Purmerbos tonight is now out, the fire brigade just announced. One firefighter sustained some blisters, but no other injuries were reported.
The fire consisted of several small fires in the grass of the Purmerbos. “The fire brigade is now doing the last checks together with Staatsbosbeheer,” the spokesperson for the Zaanstreek Waterland safety region tells NH. “And they possibly extinguish the last small fires.”
The total area of the fire is not yet clear. A police helicopter and a drone from the fire brigade took to the air, “but it was not possible to see how big it was,” said the spokesman.
Fire whips
Because it concerned fires in the grass, the fire was mainly fought with so-called fire whips. This is a tool with a handle, with spring-shaped metal strips attached to it in a fan shape. This allows the ground to be turned up, preventing the smoldering fire from flaring up again. “And that has paid off.”
