StWe are living in extremely difficult, challenging and uncertain times. Many parents we face the present and also the future with anxiety, fear and stress, we feel helpless in the face of situations that arise. Life goes on and things happen out of our control. On June 19 at 20, a free online workshop dedicated to parents of teenagers. Two hours together with Laura Peltonen to receive advice on emotional well-being in the family and small but powerful strategies for dealing with the inevitable conflicts and moments of stress with the children.
Mothers of teenagers: a shared effort
Especially us mothers of teenagers we are often stressed by all the commitments we have, and by all the expectations and demands on us. We have to manage everything, know everything, be good at everything, have infinite energy. And at the same time raise our children peacefully. And all this while we have problems at work, we face illnesses, we have arguments with our husbands, we have financial problems, and we feel inadequate and powerless in the face of teenagers who don’t listen to us, do badly in school and have problems of various kinds. What a pain!
But we have a very strong power within us. We can influence our mind and our reactions to what is happening around us, to find our internal balance despite the events that happen. There are effective tools that can help us manage anxiety and stress.
Being a mother is a full time job, hard work that requires dedication and a great deal of patience. But we must not forget to take care of ourselves, in order to be able to take care of others. Whether it’s children, husbands, elderly parents, relatives, friends in need, pets, our home, our plants, volunteer work.
Teenagers learn mostly from examples
For mothers, life revolves around the needs of others, especially the family, but to manage stress it is necessary to give space and time to self-care. This is basically for two very specific reasons:
1) If we feel good, it’s easier to take care of others. It is not selfishness but a healthy need to recover energy to be able to be present and loving with those close to us and to have the strength to carry on despite the difficulties and challenges that life throws at us.
2) The teenagers learn mostly by following examples (not what you say but what you do): if we take care of ourselves we also stimulate our children to take care of themselves.
This all seems simple and obvious, but then we don’t. Because we don’t have time, because we don’t think about it, because we’re tired, because we always put others first, because we don’t know where to start.
Parents of teenagers: the tools to face the difficulties
To feel good it is instead important to listen to our internal voice, not that internal voice that always tells you negative things, but the more hidden voice that tells you what is really important in life, what really matters. It’s important to give space to that voice, especially if it has been telling you for some time that it would be better to slow down, to find time for yourself, and to focus more energy on what brings pleasure and well-being.
In order to give space to that voice, among a thousand daily commitments and worries, it is important to define priorities, and each one must define their own, no one else can tell you what should be priorities for you.
