Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson from VfL Gummersbach is coach of the year in the Handball Bundesliga.
As the league association HBL announced, the 43-year-old Icelander prevailed in the vote of the managing directors and coaches. Sigurdsson has currently led the traditional club from Oberbergisch to tenth place as a promoted team.
On Thursday, VfL won its home game against Frisch Auf Göppingen 35:32 (16:15). With a win on Sunday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) at relegated TSV GWD Minden, Gummersbach can go even further up the table.
Sigurdsson, who is only in his third year as a coach, had already been named Coach of the Season in the Bundesliga 2 last season.
