Status: 08.06.2023 09:50 a.m

All important events, the live tracker and background information on the Ocean Race with Boris Herrmann’s team Malizia are available in the NDR.de live ticker.

Sixth stage starts in Aarhus – fly-by in Kiel

Cast off in Aarhus! Today at 6.10 p.m. the sixth and penultimate stage of the Ocean Race will start off the Danish coast. The “Sprint” is just 800 nautical miles to The Hague in the Netherlands, where the Imoca racing yachts are expected to arrive on Sunday afternoon.

The highlight from a German point of view is the fly-by of the fleet in the Kiel Fjord on Friday. The NDR broadcasts live from Kiel from 3 p.m.

Harris still believes in Malizia’s overall victory

One day before the start of stage six in Aarhus, Will Harris was optimistic that Team Malizia could still win the Ocean Race. “Four points behind have to be made up. Especially because all five boats are now taking part in the race again. A lot can still happen,” said the Brit.

The overall standings in the Ocean Race

1. 11th Hour Racing – 28 points
2. Team Holcim – 27 points
3. Team Malizia – 24 points
4. Biotherm Racing – 17 points
5. GUYOT environment – Team Europe – 2 points

Mayor Kampfer hopes for Kiel as a stage location

The Guyot yacht, which was repaired in a Kiel shipyard on the North Sea Canal, was bid farewell by the city’s Lord Mayor, Ulf Kampfer. “It’s great that the team is making it back to the starting line. As mayor of the city of Kiel, I can say that we are proud – even if I haven’t contributed to it. It’s a privilege of the office that you can be there at such a moment may be,” said the SPD politician.

Kampfer revealed himself to be a big fan of the Ocean Race: “It’s incredibly exciting and great to be able to follow it on the tracker. That the fleet on June 9th, exactly 21 years after the victory of the ‘Illbruck’ in a fly-by Kiel returns gives hope for more, because Aarhus was also a fly-by in the last race and is now a stage town.”

Dutreux as a guest on the Malizia

A skipper without a boat? That is not how it works! While the repaired Guyot yacht is brought to Aarhus from the Kiel Canal, Benjamin Dutreux shortens the waiting time as “Special Guest” on board the Malizia Seaexplorer.

Guyot ready to rejoin the race

After a broken mast on stage four, Team Guyot rejoins the race on stage six. The boat was repaired at a shipyard in Kiel.

France’s Sailing Federation is investigating allegations against Escoffier

The French Sailing Federation (FFVoile) is examining the allegations against the resigned Holcim skipper Kevin Escoffier and is not ruling out the opening of disciplinary proceedings. As association president Jean-Luc Denécheau said, Escoffier is said to have “behaved inappropriately” towards a young woman at a party in Newport.

If true, “they are behaviors that cannot be tolerated. They have no place in our association,” Denécheau said. Escoffier himself had written in a tweet about an “alleged incident”, but later deleted the posting.

Malizia Last in Biotherm Victory in In-Port Race in Aarhus

For the Malizia – Seaexplorer there was nothing to get at the In-Port-Race. The crew around skipper Boris Herrmann finished last off the Danish coast. Meanwhile, Team Biotherm celebrated a start-finish victory. An almost perfect performance, not only when you consider that the crew had only steered their yacht into the port of Aarhus at 9 p.m. the evening before after crossing the Atlantic.

Second place went to Holcim PRB. 11th Hour Racing kept Malizia at bay behind them. Biotherm thus secured 5 points in the special evaluation. There were two more for Malizia.

11th Hour thus extended its lead (20 points) in front of Malizia (18) by one point. Biotherm and Holcim follow behind with the same number of points (14). Guyot is off last (5).

Biotherm strong as an ox without a break

I guess nobody expected that. After two out of three laps on the course in front of Aarhus, Biotherm is leading the in-port race with aplomb. It was 9 p.m. yesterday when the team finally arrived in Denmark after crossing the Atlantic. Now the crew of skipper Paul Meilhat is keeping Holcim-PRB at bay. For the Malizia, third place is still possible, which is currently held by 11th Hour Racing.

In-port race with biotherm, only without guyot

The in-port race has started in Aarhus – including Team Biotherm, which only arrived on the Danish coast late on Saturday evening. Thus, four crews fight for points in the special classification. Also the Malizia with skipper Boris Herrmann – plus 11th Hour and Holcim. Guyot Enviroment’s damaged boat is not yet seaworthy but is expected to return for the final two stages of the Ocean Race.

Undocking for the in-port race

At 2.15 p.m. the In-Port-Race starts in front of Aarhus. The mood when the Malizia undocked with Skipper Boris Herrmann could not have been better.

Holcim skipper Kevin Escoffier resigns

The Ocean Race fleet will start the Aarhus harbor race on Sunday without “Holcim – PRB” skipper Kevin Escoffier. The 43-year-old Frenchman from Lamor-Plage near Lorient resigned from his post in the Swiss team on Saturday evening. Escoffier himself announced this in a post on the Instagram social media platform.

“I have decided to step down from my duties as Team Holcim-PRB skipper until the end of this edition of The Ocean Race. I admire the dedication and quality of work of this great team that I have had the privilege of leading from the start of the race” , wrote Escoffier.

The team did not comment on the decision, instead announcing the crew for the harbor race. Escoffier is missing from the line-up. The fleet of Imoca yachts will start the port race at 2.15pm on Sunday before the sixth of seven stages begins on June 8th.

Second woman aboard the Malizia

Personnel change at the Malizia Seaexplorer: Axelle Pillain will strengthen the crew around skipper Boris Herrmann, Will Harris, Rosalin Kuiper and on-board reporter Antoine Auriol on the sixth leg.

The 32-year-old Frenchwoman, who replaces Yann Eliés, has been working in the Malizia team for a year, mainly taking care of the electronics and performance aspects of the boat.

Guyot comeback: Repairs in Kiel shipyard

Troubled by technical problems, Team Guyot rejoins the race on the sixth stage from Aarhus to The Hague. The oldest of the five Imoca yachts is currently in a Kiel shipyard on the Kiel Canal and is scheduled to sail to Aarhus on Tuesday evening. The stage starts there next Thursday.

Guyot with Berlin’s Robert Stanjek suffered a broken mast on the fourth leg and therefore did not reach the finish line in Newport. Instead, the crew steered the boat under emergency rigging to nearby Halifax in Canada. Guyot did not take part in the fifth stage.

The competition from 11th Hour Racing provided the replacement mast “at extremely favorable conditions”, said Guyot team manager Jens Kuphal. The repair is coordinated by Marc Pickel from Kiel. The 2008 Olympic participant telephoned a crew of boat builders from Spain, Italy, Sweden and Germany.
